European Challenge Cup (Amlin Challenge Cup)

This tournament is the sister competition to the Heineken Cup, contested by teams from England, France, Wales, Ireland, Italy, Romania (and on some occasions, Spain and Portugal). The Cup begins in a format of five pools, with the winners moving on to knock-out phase, joined by three clubs that parachute in from the pool stage of the Heineken Cup, with the Challenge Cup winner receiving an automatic berth in the following season’s top-tier tournament.

England’s Harlequins became the first team to win the European Challenge Cup three times after a 19-18 win over France’s Stade Francais at the conclusion of the 2010-11 season.
