Italian Serie A

Established in its current form in 1929 and consisting of 20 clubs, Serie A is the top division in Italian soccer and is widely considered one of the world’s premier domestic leagues. Each year, the bottom three clubs in the league table are relegated to Serie B, while the top two clubs from Serie B are then promoted automatically to the Serie A and the third through sixth place clubs enter a promotion playoff for a final spot in the Serie A.

Juventus is the most successful team in the history of Italian soccer with 27 Serie A titles, 11 international titles and is sixth in the world with the most international titles recognized by UEFA and FIFA. During the 2010/11 campaign, A.C. Milan won its 18th league title after a scoreless draw against Roma with two rounds remaining in the season. The teams relegated to Serie B were Sampdoria, Brescia, and Bari, while Atalanta, Siena, and Novara were promoted to the top division.
