Ligue 1 was inaugurated in 1932 under the name National before switching to Division 1 after a year of existence. The name lasted until 2002 before switching to its current name. It is the country's primary football competition and serves as the top division of the French football league. Contested by 20 clubs, it operates on a system of promotion and relegation with Ligue 2, while the top two teams win spots in the UEFA Champions League group stage.
The current champions are Lille, who clinched their third overall title in the 2010-11 season – and its first in over 57 years – against Paris Saint-Germain with one match to spare. Évian, Ajaccio, and Dijon were promoted to the top division, while Monaco, Lens, and Arles-Avignon were relegated to Ligue 2.
American star and USMNT captain, Carlos Bocanegra, currently plays for French side Saint-Étienne.
